What is the estimated tax safe harbor?
The IRS generally won't charge an underpayment penalty if your withholding and timely estimated payments total at least the smaller of 90% of this year's tax or 100% of last year's tax. If last year's AGI was over $150,000 ($75,000 if married filing separately), the prior-year figure is 110%.
When is the Q4 2026 estimated tax payment due?
January 15, 2027. It covers income earned September 1 through December 31, 2026.
Do I have to pay estimated tax if I owe less than $1,000?
Generally no. You usually don't owe the penalty if you'll owe less than $1,000 after subtracting withholding and refundable credits, or if you had no tax liability for a full 12-month prior year.
Is this tax advice?
No. It's a free planning calculator based on the general rules in IRS Publication 505. Special cases (farmers, fishers, uneven income, a short prior year) can differ, so check with a tax professional.
